Fuglsang Kunstmuseum (Fuglsang Art Museum) owns a drawing of the same motif, that one reproduced in Peter Michael Hornung, “Peder Severin Krøyer”, 2002, p. 39.

In the summer of 1872 P. S. Krøyer and his friend Frants Henningsen went to stay two months in Arildsleje, a small fishing village in Sweden known for it's charming location. Many Danish painters went there for shorter or longer periods, especially after a nice inn opened in 1856.

In the second half of the 19th century many painters found new motifs among the villagers and peasants in their daily environment, as here the shoemaker in his low-ceilinged workshop with flowers in the window sill and a clock on the wall in the background.
