Augustin Gamél, 1839–1904, was a merchant in Copenhagen. He had a huge interest in the geographical research and served on the board at the Royal Danish Geographical Society. He thus supported the geographical research and helped among others A. Hovgaard to realize the plan for a North Pole expedition. He also provided financial assistance to Fridtjof Nansens journey on ski on The Ice Sheet. In 1888, he was appointed Councillor of State.
