Jacques Necker was the finance minister of the French king Louis XVI. He wrote this work after his dismissal due to the intervention of Marie Antoinette in 1781. The work describes the finances of France before the Revolution and is considered to be an important account of this. He was reinstated as minister of finance in 1788.
