Edvard Munch (b. Løten, Hedmark 1863, d. Ekely 1944)

“Edith Rode”, 1908–09. Unsigned. Handcoloured lithograph worked with pencil. The lithograph printed by Dansk Reproduktionsanstalt. Visible size 44×40,5 cm.

Literature: Woll no. 311. Literature: Schiefler no. 280. Provenance: Printer Otto Wennerberg.

This sheet is unique in that Munch has cut in the original composition and added an extra sheet. Pencil modifications have then been made to the model's hairstyle. In addition, work has been done on the shape of the face at the top of the sheet, and on five figures at the bottom of it. Among them is the characteristic profile sketch of the model's husband, poet Helge Rode. The poet couple were close friends of Edvard Munch.  The work provides a unique insight into the artist's well-known graphical process that took place over several stages with numerous additions to and variations of the same motif.
