Christen Købke (b. Copenhagen 1810, d. s.p. 1848)

Head of a peacock. Presumably a study from a Pompeian wall painting. Unsigned. Inscribed with the artist's choice of colours: Light gray, white and blue. Lead on paper laid on paper. 9×14 cm.

Christen Købke stayed from 1838 to 1840 in Italy and in 1839 he was in Naples, where he copied multiple Pompeian wall paintings from the museum, amongst others a painting of a peacock (see the Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Christen Købke by Jørgen Folmer and Iben From, no. 142d: “En påfugl på hvid grund” (A peacock on white ground), inscribed Naples 4th of Juli 1839, reproduced p. 371).

Købke later used these copies and studies from Naples and Pompeii as an inspiration for the decoration of the ceilings in the Thorvaldsen Museum.

Condition

The paper has turned slightly brown. A single discolouration.
