Vilhelm Lundstrøm (b. Copenhagen 1893, d. s.p. 1950)

Still life with yellow pitcher and red jar, 1945. Signed and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 80×62 cm.

Provenance: Finn Lorentzen, Charlottenlund. Acquired directly from the artist via his brother - the painter Mogens Lorentzen (1892–1953) - in April 1945. Hence by descent in the family and not previously exhibited or offered for sale.

The acquaintance between Mogens Lorentzen and Vilhelm Lundstrøm dates back to before 1918, when they first exhibited together. The work is a 'newly discovered' painting by Vilhelm Lundstrøm in the respect that it does not figure in Preben Wilmann & Marianne Brøns' catalogue raisonné “Lundstrøm” from 1977.

For the most of his life Finn Lorentzen kept a diary. On April 17 1945 he writes: “I have bought her [his wife Gretel, on the occasion of their wedding anniversary] a picture by Lundstrøm for 1,200 kr. It is not dry yet from Lunnes hand. I collected it this morning from him and Yrsa by car”.
