J. F. Willumsen (b. Copenhagen 1863, d. Cannes 1958)

Study for “Erkendtligheden, ud i Naturen” (The gratuity, out into Nature), third painting in the trilogy “Moder og datter i tre alderstrin” (Mother and daughter in three stages of life). Marked 9. Februar 1904. Attested on the reverse: “af J.F. Willumsen, attess. Edith Willumsen”. Oil on canvas. 38×29 cm.

In 1903–04, Willumsen was commissioned to paint a series of three paintings for the dining room of sugar refiner Jacob Lachman at Charlottenlund Castle near Ystad. Lachman had actually asked for dark still life paintings, but the willful Willumsen instead delivered three sunlit portraits.

This is a study of the adult daughter who, in the third painting of the series, enthusiastically takes her aged mother out of the dark living room and into the countryside, out into the light, which in this sketch also pours in from the right.
