Marts 1909) and with dedication on the reverse “Til Degn. Til Minde om mange smukke St. Hansblus i Østerby. 21de Marts 1909 - P. S. Krøyer” (To Degn. In memory of many beautiful bonfires in Østerby on St. John's Eve. March 21 1909 - P. S. Krøyer). Charcoal on paper. Visible size 25×41 cm.

P. S. Krøyer's idea of portraying his friends from Skagen around a bonfire at St. John's Eve arose in the early 1890ies. After several drafts and sketches, including this one, Krøyer completed the painting “Sankt Hans Blus paa Skagen Strand” in 1906. It was to be his last major work.

Provenance: Degn Brøndum; clog maker Jens Peter Petersen and his wife Kristiane Marie, née Pedersen, Kappelborg, Skagen; their descendants till now.
