Dankvart Dreyer (b. Assens 1816, d. Barløse 1852)

A saint standing with a book in his left hand. Unsigned. Oil on panel. 26×17 cm.

Leo Swane, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Dankvart Dreyer no. 205. Suzanne Ludvigsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Dankvart Dreyer no 279, reproduced part II p. 110.

Susanne Ludvigsen writes about the painting (in danish): The small picture is too cleaned, ie. a heavy-handed later cleaning of the surface unfortunately have removed original layers of paint. It can be seen especially in the areas around the saint's left hand and the today almost invisible book. According to Karl Madsen, 1912, Dankvart Dreyer painted in the Barløse years on small pieces of wood from small shopkeepers. In this painting an original writing of 'Thee' and 'Peber', executed in calligraphic handwriting, eventually has worked its way up through the artist's thin almost transparent layers of paint and then in a mysterious way but in perfect coloristic harmony has mixed ins own message with that of the painting (p. 110).
