Daniel Spoerri (b. Galati, Roumania 1930)

“Le Chapeau”, 1976. Assemblage. 130×160×40 cm.

Exhibited: “Dødsspringet”, Charlottenborg, Copenhagen 1976, ill. and described in the catalogue:

A situation from the flea market Kremlin - Bicêtre: "It is often a problem to get the trader to sell all of his exhibited goods. Mainly because he has only thought about prices for individual pieces, and suddenly to his astonishment he is asked for a price for the whole lot, and he fears he is being duped. In this case he thought I meant a bundle of old postcards that I was interested in. But, as he got to keep them, and as it was already late lunchtime and on top of that it was rainy weather, he was happy to let me have the rest of the junk cheaply. In this case he didn't care what I wanted to do with it. Otherwise, even after perfect negotiations, such total sell outs still raise a lot of questions, which I get out of with the magical explanation that it is for television. An answer which apparently explains everything, because the television is the permit for anything unusual, which disturbs our familiar mindscape. In addition there were the roebuck horns and the fallow deer antlers in Stubbekøbing collected by a forester in Ostholstein, that fitted in so well with the whole thing and actually only explained it; for example the faded taffeta curtains, the cartridges and the old fashioned inkwell stand; attributes of a stale, sulky fin de siècle salon.

I would also like to mention the hat, which was actually intended for another picture, but the coat hook top right in the pile of stuff demanded it, and so it is not stuck on and is removable, ready to honour this attitude, which still expects polite curtsies and bows."
