Johann Michael van Selow, mid 18th century

Glass beadwork decorated table, the top inlaid with numerous glass beads in shades of green and blue. Later black painted lower part, each side with candle slides, cabriole legs. Braunschweig, mid 18th century. H. 74 cm. L. 70 cm. W. 46 cm.

Johann Michael van Selow was of Dutch origin and worked in Braunschweig from 1755 to around 1772, where he produced a large amount of furniture for Carl 1., Duke of Braunschweig. What really brought him renown were tables like this one, which were prized for their elegant execution and practical use. Similar tables can be seen at the Stadtische Museum in Braunschweig, Victoria & Albert Museum, the Bowes Museum and Barnard Castle, County Durham. Literatur: H. Kreisel and G.
