Asger Jorn (b. Vejrum 1914, d. Århus 1973)

“Didaska V”. Signed Asger J. 45. Oil on canvas. 47×36 cm.

Literature: Guy Atkins: “Jorn in Scandinavia 1930–1953”, Copenhagen 1968, no. 394, ill. p. 360. Provenance: Fru Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg, Copenhagen. Provenance: Kresten Krestensen, Copenhagen. Provenance: Albert Lorentsen, Copenhagen.

In the summer of 1944 Jorn spent a couple of months at Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg's house in Tibirke. Her pet name was “Dida” and at that time Jorn signed a number of his watercolours “Aska” for Asger. In this way the term “Didaska-compositions” came into being. Typically the Didaska-compositions show two closely related bird-like figures with large heads. The motive has often been seen as an expression of the erotic attraction between Jorn and the 20 years older Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg.
