Jens Juel (b. Balslev, Funen 1745, d. Copenhagen 1802)

“Postkører mellem København og Hamborg Jørgen Madsen Brøndsted (1724–1787)”. Jørgen Madsen Brøndsted (1724–1787) mail contractor between Copenhagen and Hamburg. In a grey violet jacket with yellow lining, black neck cloth, grey cap with red border, brown hair, ring in the ear and pipe in the hand. Signed J. Juel (on the pipe near the edge of the frame). Oil on canvas. 46×39 cm. Gilt Louis XVI frame.

Ellen Poulsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Jens Juel no. 26, reproduced p. 32.

Provenance: Consul Frost in Horsens, who offered this one and two other paintings by Jens Juel to the brewer Carl Jacobsen. Pastor H. M. Fenger, his estate auction, Winkel & Magnussen 85, 1830 no. 249, reproduced p. 37 (titled Jens Juel's brother and provenance the painter's family, Fyn), bought by Oluf Bay. Bruun Rasmussen auction 227, 1968 no. 354, reproduced on the frontispiece (titled Jens Juel's brother). Bruun Rasmussen auction 453, 1983 no. 97 reproduced p. 11, again as the brother of Juel.

The portrayed was earlier said to be Jens Juel's brother as mentioned above, but today there is no doubt that it is a portrait of mail contractor Jørgen Madsen Brønsted.
