Elsinore porcelain bowl decorated in colours with flower festoon and a British bark in cartouche. 19th century. Diam. 27 cm.
In 1429 Eric of Pomerania ordered all ships passing through the Sound to pay duty and thereby grounded 400 years of duty adventure. The dues were paid in Helsingor where the ships anchored, and supplies were bought in the city's grocery stores. To thank the captain, the shopkeeper often offered a punch bowl, decorated with a picture of a sailboat off Kronborg. Today this bowls are to be found throughout the world.
Wear due to age and use.
