A pair of Louis XVI gilt and patinated bronze candelabra, attributed to Pierre Philippe Thomire (1751–1843), each with Vestal virgin adorned with four curved foliate candle arms, cylindrical marble plinths on lion bases. France, late 18th century. H. 82. (2)
The design is known from the bedroom in the private suite of the Empress Maria Feodorovna at the Pavlovsk Palace in Saint Petersburg, which was decorated in 1805. Literature: Pavlovsk Palace & Park, Aurora Art Publishers, Leningrad, 1975, p. 266.
