Arthur Conan Doyle

A. Conan Doyle: Strand Magazine. London: George Newnes Ltd., London 1891–1893. Published in 24 monthly issues with original wrappers, all advertisements and illustrated by Sidney Paget. Original issue magazine format measure: 24,6×16,5 cm. (9,6×6,5 inches). Wear to most spines, some spines with loss of paper and text. 2 covers repaired. Wear. Housed in 4 cloth boxes, titles on spines. (4)

These issues contain all the Sherlock Holmes short stories, originally published as single stories in the Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892 (later again published in book-form in the two volumes “The adventures of Sherlock Holmes”).

The series starts July 1991 with “Scandal in Bohemia” and runs until December 1893 with “Final Problem” in which Doyle tries to get rid of Holmes by catapulting him into the Reichenbach Falls in the grasp of Mr. Moriarty.

Whilst the hardbound volumes survive comparatively well, these fragile single issues were not intended to be kept for postery and are very rarely found complete.
