A book by H. P. Rohde, “En guldaldermaler i Italien”, 1977, goes with this lot. The “Shepherd boy” is reproduced on the cover of the book.
Statens Museum for Kunst (The National Gallery of Denmark) owns a smaller version and almost identical painting of “the shepherd boy” bought directly from Constantin Hansen in 1879. The shepherd boy was a model for a figure in “The Ceres temple in Paestum” dated 1841 (Emil Hannover no. 226).
Provenance : The present painting was also purchased directly from Constantin Hansen by the current owner's family for 300 DKK.
