Hack Kampmann (b. Ebeltoft 1856, d. Frederiksberg 1920)

A unique pair of mahogany “Games” bergères for a games table. Armrests inlaid with marquetry and plaques in the shape of the four suits of cards. Sides and back with woven cane. Loose cushions in seat and back upholstered with light coloured fabric. Made and designed circa 1919. (2)

Provenance: Great grandson of Christian Kampmann. Special order designed by Hack Kampmann and made 1919 for use at Palstrup Manor. Palstrup Manor was aquired by Christian Kampmann in 1918, and he commisioned his brother Hack to renovate the entire estate including the interior. Hack Kampmann was a highly acclaimed and productive architect active in Denmark from 1878 up until his death in 1920. From 1908–1918 he also served as a professor at the Royal Academy of Arts' school of architecture. His works spans between the style of historicism with a move towards neo-classicism. His last project “Politigården” in Copenhagen, which was completed after his death, is regarded as the last neo-classical building in Northern Europe. His works in the field of furniture was limited and mainly related to family and a few others. He designed a very exceptional desk for the founder of Ny Carlsberg brewery Carl Jacobsen. His furniture is characterized by elaborate use of marquetry.
