Søren Kierkegaard

Søren Kierkegaard: To opbyggelige Taler. Cph 1844. 8vo. 1st ed. Inscribed by the author on front free end paper + Owner's name (H. Nielsen). Title with light foxing. Bound in full black paper, all edges gilt. Binding with wear, spine defective.

Presentation copy inscribed by Kierkegaard to professor Nielsen. “Min uforglemmelige Lærer / Hr Prof Nielsen / R af D og DM taknemligst og kjærligst fra Forfatteren”.

This important work by Søren Kierkegaard is bound in a characteristic black glazed paper binding which was personally commissioned by the philosopher. Kierkegaard was very particular about the books he presented to others. He had them bound in fine bindings, mostly in black glazed paper. Compared to his contemporary author colleague Hans Christian Andersen, he only gave them to people of importance or close relation to him - mostly men. Thus characteristic bindings commissioned by Kierkegaard are very rare on the market.

Provenance: H.P. Rohde's Kierkegaard collection.
