Vintage silver gelatine prints, with annotations and artist's stamps PHOTO ROBERT CAPA and Atelier R. Capa on versos. Minor wear. All c. 24,3×18 cm.
In 1938 Robert Capa spent more than half a year covering the Chinese resistance agianst the Japanese invasion, also known as The Sino-Japanese war, which was widely regarded as the eastern front of the antifascist struggle, of which Spain was the western struggle.
During his stay Capa documented Chiang Kai-shek's influential wife's visit to a hospital were she took care of the wounded.
A photograph from the the same series of photographs from this event was part of a large exhibition of photographs from China at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1972. Ref: Cornell Capa: Behind the Great Wall of China, Metropolitan Museum, 1972, section IV, picture # 13.
