Porcelain corner shelf, top with three decorated in colors and gold. Apparently unmarked. Presumably Russia. 19th century. H. 36 cm. D. 28 cm.

Provenance: Johan Poul Quaade (b. Copenhagen 1888, d. Copenhagen 1958) and his wife, Xenia Ilinitchnaja Solonina (b. Kiev. 1895, d. Copenhagen 1986). Johan Quaade worked for the Great Northern Telegraph Company in Russia and married Xenia in 1913 in Minsk, daugter of a landowner and police officer in Kiev. Shortly after the wedding Johan and Xenia Quaade moved to St. Petersburg, but left Russia in 1918 due to the revolution and the civil war. First they went to Denmark, Johan's country of birth, but soon after to Turkey and Riga, where Johan Quaade set up as a businessman. In 1937–1938 they moved permanently to Denmark. The couple owned many Russian antiques and paintings, which they brought to Denmark from their earlier home in Russia, but also acquired from the many Russian refugees, whom they met on their way in Russia 1917–1918. Then by descent.
