Provenance: The painter Janus la Cour. Consul General Johan Hansen's collection, his auctions, Part l, Winkel & Magnussen 119, 1932 no. 55.

The Temple of Minerva was a temple on the short side of the Forum of Nerva in Rome. It was completed by Domitian in 97 AD - he had a particular devotion to Minerva. It was still well-preserved in the 16th century, when pope Paul V used materials from the temple for his Fontana dell'Acqua Paola on the Janiculum Hill and for the Borghese chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore.
