Golden Age painter c. 1830

A young painter in the process of painting a nude model at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 57×51 cm.

The painting must have been painted between 1828, when the casts after Thorvaldsen's works were placed in a cabinet next to the Academy's collection of Antiques - and next to the premises of the painting class - and 1833, when the casts were moved to Thorvaldsen's studio next to the Botanical Gardens.

It has been suggested that the young painter in the painting is a portrait of the German painter Joseph Heinrich Marr (1808–1871) from Munich. A good friend of William Bendz, who painted Marr several times.

Provenance: Chamberlain H. H. Konow's estate. Bruun Rasmussen auction 331, 1975 no. 10. Bruun Rasmussen auction 336, 1975 no. 86.
