Karel van Mander III, attributed to, 17. century (b. Delft 1609, d. Copenhagen 1670)

Portrait of King Christian IV with pigtail, white lace collar and the Order of the Elephant. Unsigned. Oil on oak panel. Oval in an octagonal newer frame. 46×35 cm.

This type of portrait of the King has been executed both by van Mander and his workshop several times and can be seen at Gaunø, and according to Povl Eller, “Karel van Mander og Adam Wuchters”, 1971 p. 145–146 several others are known in private collections.

Provenance: A note on the back tells that the painting was bought at Grøftebjerg farm, Vissenbjerg, Fyn. The Brøste collection no. 106.

The Brøste Collection at Ovengaden Oven Vandet 10 was establised by manufacturer Ulf Brøste (1904–1970).
