Constantin Hansen (b. Rome 1804, d. Frederiksberg 1880)

“Parti af Forum Romanum med Concordia-Templet og Septimius Severus' Triumphbue, set fra Foden af Capitol”. View of the Roman Forum with the Temple of Concordia and the Arch of Septimius Severus seen from the foot of the Capitoline Hill. Signed and dated Const. H. 1846. Oil on canvas. 67×84.

Constantin Hansen must have been fascinated by these impressive antique ruins. At least four paintings are known of the Temple of Concordia and the Arch of Septimius Severus. Emil Hannover, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Constantin Hansen mentions no. 219, dated 1841/1843, a study. Presumably for no. 220, “Udsigt fra Clivus Capitolinus over en del af Forum” View from Clivus Capitolinus over a part of Forum. In 1846 Constantin Hansen exhibited a larger and more grandiose painting, no. 238 in the Catalogue Raisonné . Beyond this, the present painting with a relaxing young Italian couple in the foreground. The four paintings are seen from different angles and even some in worm's eye view to make the ruins even larger.
