Carl Johan Bonnesen (b. Aalborg 1868, d. Copenhagen 1933)

Udkast til Danserindebrønden (Model for the The Ballerina Fountain). Patinated bronze on a base of greyish marble. H. 59 cm. W. 45 cm.

In 1910 brewer Carl Jacobsen asked sculptors Edvard Eriksen (1876–1959), Carl Bonnesen (1868–1933) and subsequently also Rudolph Tegner (1873–1950) for a proposal regarding a memorial that would honour the ballet. As a patron of the arts Carl Jacobsen himself had quite firm opinions about the monument's design, and the choice fell on Tegner. Three women from the Danish Royal Ballet, Elna Jørgen Jensen Lauesgaard, Emilie Smith and Grethe Ditlevsen were used as models for the dancing women at the well. A bronze cast of the winning project by Rudolf Tegner was made in 1913 and erected in Kongens Have, Copenhagen. In 1933 it was moved to Elsinore, where it still stands, now by the road to Kronborg.
