Poul Kjærholm (b. Østervrå 1929, d. Hillerød 1980)

“The Bowstring Chair”. Unique easy chair with laminated ash wood frame. Seat and back with sand coloured flag halyard. Designed 1952. Made as a prototype approx. 1952 by Fritz Hansen.

Provenance: Poul Kjærholm, hence by descent in the family. Exhibited: Fritz Hansen, Zürich 1952. This present chair is one of only two ever made.

Kjærholm graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts in 1952 and was hired by Fritz Hansen to work in the factory experimenting with materials. Kjærholm experimented with steam bent wood, and the “bowstring” chairs from this period were designed with a minimum number of parts, which eliminated the traditional distinction between the legs and the seat frame.
