Constantin Hansen (b. Rome 1804, d. Frederiksberg 1880)

Portrait of medallist F. C. Krohn (1806–1883) during the carnival in Rome in a Greek costume. 1839. Signed C. H. Oil on paper laid on canvas. 31.5×21.5 cm. Damborg frame with a label.

The painting was carried out in Rome in 1839 while Christen Købke was making a similar one. The two friends painted next to each other. Købke's painting is owned by Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo.

Literature: “Kunst i Privat Eje”, 1945 vol. II p. 44, here reproduced next to Købke's painting of Krohn. (Hjalmar Bruhn). When the painting was sold in 1972 at Bruun Rasmussen the catalogue text mentioned: “Krohn in capt. Kronstrand's costume returned from Egypt 1839”.

Provenance: Baroness Christine Stampe, Nysø, a good friend of the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, bought the painting in Rome 1841, it was inherited by her son Henrik, then his daughter Christine married to prefect and chamberlain Vilh. Bardenfleth in his first marriage. After his death sold to Hjalmar Bruhn, his auction, ABR 276, 1972 no. 2.

F. C. Krohn (1806–1883) was a medallist at the Royal Mint in Copenhagen 1841–1873. Before that he went on a long trip from 1835–1839 to Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Munich and Rome. He left Denmark travelling with his good friend the painter Constantin Hansen on the first part of the trip.
