Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar (b. Budapest 1871, d. Moscow 1960)

“Foraarssol”. Spring sun. Signed and dated Igor Grabar Riga March 1921 (in Cyrillic). Oil on cardboard. 52×65 cm. On the reverse of the painting Danish clippings from the below-mentioned exhibition.

Provenance: Haagen Falkenfleth (1875–1957), journalist and later editor of the Danish newspaper Dagens Nyheder (Nationaltidende). He involved himself heavily in helping the Russian refugees, that had come to Copenhagen after the revolution in 1917. This commitment led to a respectful cooperation with Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna of Russia and her daughter, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna of Russia. Therefore, Haagen Falkenfleth also built up several friendships with Russian artists, including the painter Philip Andreievich Maliavine, the choreographer and ballet dancer Michel Fokine and the former Imperial Russian Ambassador in Copenhagen. This also gave Haagen Falkenfleth the opportunity to acquire Russian art and artifacts, including the above-mentioned painting.

Exhibited: Den Frie (in Copenhagen), “Udstilling af Russiske Kunstnere” (Exhibtion of Russian Artists"), 1927 no. 35.
