H. Chr. Christensen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of P. S. Krøyer no. 201.

This work is a study for the large painting “Søndag Morgen udenfor en Ghitanabolig i Granada. Moderen sysler med sit Haandarbejde, medens Datteren smykker sig til Fest” (Sunday morning outside a Gypsy's house in Granada. The mother is seated with her handicraft, while the daughter dresses herself up for a feast), that one owned by Statens Museum for Kunst (The Danish National Gallery). An early masterpiece by Krøyer. (KMS 1121).

Provenance: Manufacturer Chr. N. Sødring. Merchant Magnus Christensen, his estate auction at Charlottenborg 1931 no. 61, reproduced p. 11, bought by mrs Caja Hagen and sold at her estate auction 1932 no. 107. Hereafter owned by the same family until now.

As a young man P. S. Krøyer travelled to Spain together with his painter-colleagues Frants Henningsen, Julius Lange and Frans Schwartz. The trip was a landmark for Krøyer. For a long period of time he studied the important Spanish painters J. A. Ribera, Murillo and especially Diego Velasquez. During his trip to Spain he travelled alone to Granada where he stayed for 6 month. In a long letter to Laurits Tuxen Krøyer mentions the progress of the painting and draws a little drawing/vignet of the motif. The letter still exists in a private Danish collection.
