Julius Paulsen at online auction
|
Right now a representative selection of works by the versatile artist Julius Paulsen are auctioned online.
Tradition and innovation are two concepts that define Julius Paulsen’s (1860-1940) artistic oeuvre. In his art he harked back to late Romanticism while also pointing forward to Modernism. With masterly skill he created portraits, figure paintings and landscapes – three genres that rendered with Paulsen’s personal style of brushwork garnered great contemporary interest. This was probably due to the fact that many of his works reflected something that was recognisably both international and national, drawing influences from Rembrandt and Jean-Jacques Henner to Laurits Tuxen, Carl Bloch, P.S. Krøyer, Viggo Johansen, Kr. Zahrtmann and Vilhelm Hammershøi. Paulsen’s figure paintings were widely embracing and interested a large art circle, whether his works touched on mythology, religion, fantasy, or were evocative and sensuous female portraits or everyday imagery. With his landscapes, Paulsen often remained within a Scandinavian context in his choice of motif and special emphasis was given to Nordic light. The Julius Paulsen selection on offer reflects many of the facets that are characteristic of his art, including intimate interiors, landscapes and portraits.
