Measuring a monumental 245 x 475 cm, Jens Birkemose’s powerful tour de force would be the perfect centrepiece for a corporate lobby or a natural focal point for a spacious home. The painting is currently exhibited at our showroom in Aarhus.

Creative firestorm

The painting on auction is a splendid example of how Jens Birkemose, who was originally trained as a pianist, was not only a maestro of music, but also a master of colour. Its expressive figurative composition is rendered with such a cornucopia of colour that it brings to mind German Expressionism, the iconography of A.R. Penck, and the energised ferocity of Jörg Immendorf. The applied pieces of textile also point to Sigmar Polke’s artistic praxis and his creative appropriation of unorthodox materials.

The painting is a resolved example of Birkemose’s wild and imaginative creativity. With its brilliant colourfulness and dynamic brushwork, the painting is a veritable vitamin boost to passersby, who now enjoy the good fortune of being able to draw energy from Birkemose’s oeuvre. Jens Birkemose has since 1976 resided in Paris and southern France.
