Arch shaped schist stele relief depicting Vishnu, standing in sampada with gadha, chakra and conch, crowned head and wearing a dhoti adorned with jewelry and draped with floral garland, flanked by Sarasvati, goddess of knowledge, and his consort Lakshmi, above and around him avatars and floral design. India. Pala period, 12th century. H. 109 cm. excl. later wooden base.

Provenance: Bought by owner's parents in Bombay.

Amendment: Director Ole Pontoppidan 1926–2015 was stationed in India for Larsen & Toubro, from 1952–64. The figure was bought in that period. The two pictures was taken in 1952 and 1956.
