Thomas Wyck (b. Bewerwyck 1616, d. Haarlem 1677)
A small Italian alleyway with a horseman asking for directions. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 60×47 cm. Louis XVI gilt frame.
Provenance: The Moltke Collection, auction Winkel & Magnussen 96, 1931 no. 151. Here described as follows:
“The narrow Italian alleyway, which runs behind the outer walls and back buildings, becomes even murkier in the juxtaposition with the clear daylight that falls in under the large arch above. The horseman asks one of the laundresses about the alleyway since it is full of water that flows through a fenced gate and past the façade of a house where a woman tends her flowers on the building’s low terrace. Outside the door lies a boat.”
The canvas is relined/waxed. Crackles. Retouches.
Please note: The item is subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Act. In the event of a hammer price of DKK 50,000 or more, including buyer’s premium, the buyer must submit a copy of a valid photo ID and proof of address in order to collect the item.
